Badrinath is one of the holiest towns in India, in terms of Hindu religious sentiments, since it is one of the four pilgrimage spots that make up the Chardham. The town is perched on the banks of the Alaknanda River, and is located 9 kms from the Nilkantha peak. It is home to the Badrinath or Badrinarayan Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Also referred to as Bhubaikunth and Tapobhumi, the temple is said to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya. The town of Badrinath is also the gateway for several treks and mountaineering expeditions, including the one to Nilkantha and another to the Nanda Devi peak, which takes more than a week to complete.
